Simmonds Woodturning is a manufacturer of handturned products ranging from architectural porch posts,columns, newels and balusters to furniture components consisting of table legs and kitchen island legs.

With turning traditions reaching back as far as the 1830's, techniques have been passed from generation to generation insuring the continuation of this rare trade. Our skilled woodturners have honed their skills with age old techniques pasted down from masters of a previous day. Many of the techniques, skills and tools are not found in the medias on production turning and this bygone profession. Each piece produced is individually handturned and hand sanded to our customers requirements without the use of tracer lathes or CNC machinery

Hand Turned versus Copy Lathe

As you can see the top example was done on a copy lathe. There is a lot of tear-out on the piece as a result of the scrapping process and dull tooling. This tear-out will turn much darker when the piece is stained, making these surfaces stand out. The bottom piece was hand turned. Notice the proper proportioning of the pattern elements, the clean cuts and the superior sanding . All details are crisp and clean.
